Are we there yet?

A Frontliner Amidst the Pandemic

Being a frontliner in these challenging times is a unique experience. We, as a health care provider don't get to choose our battle, we just fight head on, with no hesitations. We take our pledge seriously in saving lives despite the circumstances, day in and day out.

Working as a staff nurse taught me so many things. The entire experience may not be all astounding but surely I had a great deal of learnings and moments of pride. During the peak of pandemic, I have seen how the Trust is doing their best to be flexible in catering different needs for both patients and their staff.

The free meals were a very nice gesture and it means a lot! The windows in the neighborhood shouting "We Love NHS" in rainbow chalks are hugs to our soul. It inspires us to show up at work with confidence and determination despite of the unknown and uncertainty of what we would face the moment we step inside the hospital. The support we had was tremendous and it was one of the many things that kept us going.

With most of the frontliners and more than half of the vulnerable population in the UK already had their vaccines, there is a high hope that soon enough everything will be back to normal, at least. The mixed household gatherings are now in place. We can already sit next to each other in public transportation to someone not within our circle. Travel bans are slowly being lifted.

However, with the rise of the "new variant" covid cases, the progress may be halted. The fear is that we put one step forward and two steps backward with this whole pandemic state. With this in consideration, it is too early to get our hopes high, but it's not a sin to be optimistic too. Regardless of the situation, being positive always helps. The best that we could contribute is to do our part as a good citizen in our local community. Let's start by just simply wearing our mask in public places when we are required. And oh, getting the vaccine too!

I guess we are not there yet, but this too shall pass ~
